Congressman Lee Zeldin Calls for the Raising of Dune Road
Washington, DC – Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, C – NY-1) just released the following statement calling for the raising of Dune Road:
“Dune Road is an important roadway linking Long Islanders and others to the East End community, businesses and beautiful beaches.
Unfortunately, Dune Road is badly in need of infrastructure support to improve its current state. This is an issue that has been ongoing for a long time, but has gotten significantly worse over the past few years.
The road is prone to substantial and severe flooding, and becomes impassable during high tides, significant rainfall, and coastal storms. As the only emergency evacuation route for some, and a road traveled by thousands of residents daily, this is a serious safety concern to our community.
Dune Road must be raised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The road should be raised 18-24 inches, with some areas being widened 24 to 28 feet.
It’s imperative that the Army Corps commit to raising Dune Road in the next phase of the Fire Island to Montauk Point Plan (FIMP). This must be a top priority for the Army Corps and must be include in the General Reevaluation Report (GRR)."
