Rep. Zeldin Condemns Erdogan Decision Reverting Hagia Sophia to Mosque

July 11, 2020
Press Release

WASHINGTON - Today, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, issued the following statement on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decree to convert Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque:

“For over 85 years, the Hagia Sophia has served as a cherished cultural landmark and revered spiritual site welcoming to those of all religions alike. Erdogan’s decree to strip the Hagia Sophia of its museum status and deem it a mosque is a pointed attempt to unnecessarily stoke the flames of religious divisiveness. Turkey must immediately reverse this decision and maintain the Hagia Sophia’s incredible legacy as a world-renowned religious landmark and neutral museum for people of all faiths.”
