Press Release

SMITHTOWN, NY - On Monday, July 7, 2020, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) joined the Smithtown Fire Department, Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, and other local elected officials and community residents to honor 15-year-old Smithtown resident Hailee Hurtado who is credited with evacuating her family during a house fire. On June 26, 2020, Hailee Hurtado detected the smell of smoke in the house in the middle of the night and alerted her father, Jonathan, who then evacuated his wife, Evelyn, and younger daughter, Madison. Hailee went lower into the home to get her grandmother, who requires a cane to walk, out of bed while her father returned to assist her up a flight of stairs. Firefighters arrived on scene to the house already engulfed in flames, with the Hurtado family safely outside, stating the outcome of the fire would have been drastically different had Hailee not responded in such a timely manner. Congressman Zeldin presented Hailee Hurtado with a certificate commemorating her bravery.
