Rep. Zeldin Statement on Terror Attacks in Kabul, Continued Crisis in Afghanistan

August 26, 2021
Press Release

PATCHOGUE, NY - Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and United States Army veteran, just released the following statement on today’s terrorist attacks in Kabul and the continued crisis in Afghanistan:

“As an Army veteran, Member of Congress, and proud American, the situation that has unfolded in Afghanistan is infuriating. Americans and Afghan partners are under attack after the President insisted on the play call of requiring them all to get themselves to the airport for evacuation, assuring them of some ridiculously optimistic arrangement with a terrorist group to grant them safe passage, and his administration implying that if they don't make it to the airport on their own that they don't want to leave. From the failed planning and execution of this withdrawal, to the President and his administration's misleading of the public, the foolish August 31st withdrawal date that was erroneously established and should have been moved, and intelligence warnings that were brushed aside as inconvenient, I couldn't possibly be more outraged by this historic failure. The President and his team clearly are not up to the task at hand, they are trying to operate inside of a false reality, and the future is likely to only get worse. Our service members, fellow Americans, and allies abroad need American leadership and strength, not surrender and weakness. This is not about whether or not to withdraw from Afghanistan. This is about how to continue transitioning out of military conflict, but the Biden Administration is insisting on decision after decision only making conflict more likely, not less. The Administration is not being bold enough with our adversaries, considerate enough of our allies, and honest enough with the public or themselves.”
