For over two centuries, Montauk Point Lighthouse has served as one of the most recognizable symbols in our region, evoking a sense of community among Long Islanders, and attracting visitors from across the United States and foreign nations. This critical project is an investment in the future of not only Montauk Point Lighthouse, but Long Island as a whole. The landmark currently sits less than 100 feet from the receding edge of the bluff and its deteriorating stonework revetment is the only thing left protecting the lighthouse from being lost to the ocean due to erosion. This project will bolster the shoreline and provide safety reinforcements, including an 840-foot revetment with a 73-year level of protection for the lighthouse, that will ensure Montauk Point Lighthouse will continue to shine for generations to come.

This is the right decision for children across New York, who have sacrificed so much throughout the pandemic and suffered emotionally, physically and mentally from lockdowns and remote learning. I want to thank all the parents and advocates who joined me in repeated demands for the governor and state officials to follow the science and follow common sense, unmask our kids, and give them the return to normalcy that they are so desperate for and rightly deserve.

The continued violence against New York’s incredible AAPI community is disgusting, wholly un-American and must be condemned and combatted at every turn. Every American deserves freedom, economic opportunity, and safety without fear of the hatred that has become a daily occurrence on New York streets. This bipartisan legislation takes real concrete steps to combat this hate by empowering state and local governments to improve reporting and strengthen the flow of information from local law enforcement agencies. We must bring the perpetrators of these disgusting crimes to justice, and this legislation helps give us the tools to do so.

Across the U.S. last week, we celebrated National Police Week and extended our deepest gratitude to the law enforcement officers who selflessly protect and serve our communities each day. However, one week of appreciation is not sufficient to ensure police officers can do their jobs without their basic rights being threatened.
