WASHINGTON - Representatives Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, and Eliot Engel (D, NY-16), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged in a June 14, 2019, letter to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, calling on Judge Carmel Agius to reject the early release of Vlastimir Djordjevic who was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Kosovo conflict and has been connected to crimes in addition to those for which he was found guilty, including the 1999 execution-style murder of the Bytyqi brothers from Hampton Bays, New York.

Not only does Plum Island offer Long Island a diverse wildlife and ecosystem and critical habitat for migratory birds, marine mammals, and rare plants, but it is also an essential cultural and historical resource. The current law, which mandates the sale of the island to the highest bidder, is the wrong path forward, because it does not provide for public access and permanent preservation of the island, or the continued use of the research infrastructure.
